Sixty Hopkinton educators and school staff will be recognized for their work with students with special needs at a Special Education Parent Advisory Council reception later this month.
On June 10, SEPAC will be holding its annual end-of-year reception. The event, which is being hosted at the Hopkinton Public Library, will include a light dinner and elections for the SEPAC board.
New to the celebration this year will be the presentation of the Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC’s annual Inspire Award.
According to Sravan Krishna, treasurer of the Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC — a separate entity from SEPAC — the award is presented to school staff and educators who “go above and beyond” in their work with special needs students. The nominations for the award come from the community.
While Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC has been administering this award for several years, this is the first year school staff will be recognized during the SEPAC reception.
“It was an idea that just came about,” Krishna said, noting it came from a desire to be “doing more in terms of recognizing our educators who go above and beyond.”
Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC also will be recognizing the eight recipients of its Navigator Scholarship at the reception. This year, the organization is awarding eight $1,000 scholarships to Hopkinton students.
The scholarship is intended for special education students who are looking to pursue higher education, vocational training or life skills programs, according to the Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC Facebook page. The group sponsors a marathon runner annually in order to raise the funds for the scholarship.
The SEPAC reception and banquet will take place on June 10 at 6 p.m. in the Betty Strong Room at the HPL. RSVPs are not required, but preferred, and can be submitted via this Google Form. Those interested in running for a board position with SEPAC have until Friday to email sepachopkinton@gmail.com to get their name on the ballot.
