HPD removes parent from wrestling match following reports of disorderly conduct

A female parent from an out-of-town team attending the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 West/Central sectional wrestling tournament hosted by Hopkinton High School on Saturday was removed from the event by police after engaging in multiple incidents of disorderly conduct that escalated to criminal trespassing, according to a police report.

According to the report, HPD Officer Benjamin Vaz and Sgt. Cody Normandin were contacted by HHS athletic director Ricky Andrade at around 2:15 p.m. Andrade indicated that there was a parent sitting in the Springfield Central fan section who “got in someone’s face and was screaming at a wrestler that was competing against her son.”

The officers moved closer to the area to monitor the situation.

“It was clear that [the woman] was aware that we were aware of her conduct after she was spoken to, as she kept looking over at us,” Normandin’s report stated. “Twice, she walked by us and turned and passed so closely to us that her body physically made contact with myself and Officer Vaz.”

At around 4:24 p.m., Andrade notified police that the same individual was causing more issues, according to the report. At that point, Andrade requested that the woman, whose name was redacted in the report, be removed from the event.

Additionally, an unidentified coach told the officers that the woman approached him, took a photo “and issued him a threat that people were waiting for him in the parking lot.”

The officers then told the woman she needed to leave the building.

“At this point, [the woman] immediately became loud and obnoxious, speaking over the officers present and stating she was in fact not leaving,” according to the report. “We informed her of the two options present — to voluntarily leave, or be placed under arrest for trespassing. She began to exclaim multiple times that she was not leaving because she did not do anything wrong.”

The woman eventually agreed to leave and was escorted to the parking lot at 5:02 p.m., according to the report.

Acting on the concerns of the coach that the woman and others would be waiting outside, three officers checked the parking lot “but found nothing unusual.”
