Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Trails Day at Hughes Farm to include trail walks, events for kids

The Hopkinton Trails Club will recognize its 20th year as an organization with a special Trails Day celebration on July 19.

John Ritz, president of the Trails Club, said the event has two main purposes. “The primary purpose is to celebrate and promote the trails in Hopkinton, which matches the Trails Club’s mission,” he said.

The second purpose is to celebrate the club’s 20 years.

Founded in 2005, the Trails Club has helped develop multiple trails in town. It also has advised the town on trail-related matters and the establishment of town committees. The celebration on July 19 will recognize these accomplishments and promote the town’s extensive trail network.

The club is hosting the Trails Day event at the Hughes Farm property off Hayden Rowe Street. The day will feature guided walks, scavenger hunts for kids, informational sessions on how to use trail apps and other activities.

“We have folks who are really good with plant identification, so they’ll do some nature-oriented walks,” Ritz added.

He also noted that the Trails Club hoped to highlight the trails on the Colella property, which sits just north of the main Hughes property, as part of the festivities. Volunteers recently cleared an old cattle run on the property — one of three that Ritz says have been identified in the area.

The Trails Day celebration is a new event, but it keeps within the Trails Club’s history of public outreach. Ritz explained that before the COVID-19 pandemic, the club held annual trail forums with guest speakers and presentations on the state of the town’s trails.

The Trails Day event is set for Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hughes Farm property. More information can be found on the Trails Club’s event page.
