Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.
Group of HHS students to hold virtual sessions on eating disorder
Hopkinton High School students will be hosting virtual information sessions this weekend to spread awareness about anorexia.
The students, who are part of HHS’ Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) group, will be hosting the meetings on Zoom this Saturday and Sunday. Titled “Anorexia: A Hidden Struggle,” the presentations will focus on the signs of anorexia and how to help someone struggling with the eating disorder.
Vaishnavi Kanakamedala, an HHS freshman and representative for the group of students, said that anorexia is an important disorder to understand for both teenagers and adults. The Zoom meetings are ways her group is attempting to reach both of these populations.
“We want to spread awareness overall,” said Kanakamedala. “We thought a Zoom meeting would be an easy way to contact people.”
The presentations — which the students have developed and will be presenting themselves — are a culmination of efforts to spread awareness about an issue that has the highest case mortality rate of any mental illness, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. The group also has given presentations at Hopkinton Middle School, run a fundraiser and hung up informational posters around town.
Kanakamedala said her group plans to donate money earned from the fundraiser to a Boston eating disorder clinic.
