The Hopkinton Public Library is alerting residents that due to scheduled maintenance, the library could be hot for the next week or two.

Matt Leathers, the HPL’s administrative assistant, stated in a recent email to the Independent that maintenance on the library’s air conditioning system would take place from July 1-3.

“It is scheduled maintenance that we have chosen to do now, to make sure that the system continues to work well throughout the summer,” explained Leathers, adding: “Last year the system underwent significant repairs, and this will ensure that it is cooling to its capabilities.”

Though it will not change its hours — save closures on July 3-4 for the Independence Day holiday — the HPL already has canceled programming in areas of the building where installing a portable AC unit is not possible. According to Leathers, the Children’s Programming Room will see the most impact.

Residents are not discouraged from visiting the library but are warned to be aware of the heat.

“If patrons are concerned about the heat, or have heat sensitivities, we suggest postponing your library visit, using one of our adventure passes … or to visit another area library,” Leathers shared.

Added Leathers: “We appreciate patrons’ understanding.”

Changes to the library’s programming schedule can be found on the HPL calendar page. Information on alternate options, including adventure passes, can be found here.
