HHS Drama Ensemble stages musical satire for fall show

The Hopkinton High School Drama Ensemble will put on a production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” this week as its fall musical.

“[There’s] great dancing, great music,” said HHS performing arts teacher Kara Sullivan. “It’s really a clever show.”

“The Drowsy Chaperone” is a Tony Award-winning show about a musical come to life in the apartment of a diehard theater fan. According to Sullivan, it is a “madcap story about gangsters, weddings and mistaken identities” meant to parody musicals of the 1920s.

Shows start Thursday and continue through Sunday at the HHS auditorium. Tickets are available online, and children under 10 should have parental guidance due to some adult themes.

Students involved in the production have been hard at work building sets, practicing the music and rehearsing as often as possible. Sullivan noted that students even got together on Veterans Day when school was out of session so they could rehearse.

“They’re very dedicated,” she said.

Sullivan encouraged residents to attend the show even if they might not be familiar with it. “It’s so entertaining, and they’ll be glad they came,” she said.
