After delay, Parks & Rec looks to celebrate skatepark project

The Parks & Recreation Department finally will hold its ribbon cutting and celebration for the Hank Fredette Skatepark this Friday.
The opening event is set for 3 p.m. on Friday at EMC Field. The afternoon will feature a skate jam, snacks, music and giveaways from Parks & Rec and New Balance.
“It’s the perfect chance to check out the new skatepark and show off your best tricks!” the Parks & Rec event page on Facebook states.
The grand opening of the skatepark had been on on hold following a postponement back in April. The previously scheduled opening was put off because of weather.
Friday’s event will mark the end of a six-year-long effort to restore the park for public use. Former Parks & Rec employee Jenny Hart spearheaded the restoration efforts with young residents who were looking for a place to skate. The result was a community-led campaign to get Community Preservation funds allocated for renovations.
The process to begin those renovations began in 2021, though delays in the project timeline resulted in crews starting work in July 2024. Work was completed in December, and the park officially opened Jan. 1.
