Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Greyhound Friends celebrates International Dog Day with community event

The dog days of summer are coming to Greyhound Friends this weekend in celebration of International Dog Day.

This Saturday, the dog adoption shelter will host its annual Dog Day of August event. Attendees are welcomed to bring their dogs and enjoy music, refreshments, games, a pet fun run, prize raffles and more. Greyhound Friends also will offer dog nail trims and ear cleaning.

Terri Shepard, executive director of Greyhound Friends, explained in an interview with the Independent that the event — now in its fourth year — is different than the open houses the kennel organizes. “[Dog Day] allows the community to bring their dogs and spoil their dogs for a day,” she said.

“We’re trying to engage local people to come to a community event — a fun event at the kennel,” she said.

Dog Day will feature several local vendors offering items for both dogs and their owners, selling everything from handmade collars and pet soap to dog-themed merchandise and greeting cards.

Beyond the activities and the vendors, Greyhound Friends will offer kennel tours. Representatives from the Furget Me Not animal rescue will have dogs available for adoption. Baypath Humane Society also will be in attendance.

“It’s good to share in the day together and strengthen the local dog-loving community,” Shepard stated in a press release about the Dog Day event.

Dog Day of August will take place at the Greyhound Friends facility on Saddle Hill Road on Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Admission is free. Dogs are required to be leashed, vaccinated and properly socialized. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for grooming services. More information is available on the Greyhound Friends website.
