Hopkinton Police are investigating the potential theft of multiple packages from residents’ homes following a motor vehicle stop and arrest last week.
According to Deputy Chief Scott van Raalten, an HPD officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on East Main Street near Legacy Farms on Friday around 5 p.m. The officer was conducting a well-being check because the driver was pulled to the side of the road with his hazards on.
The driver then produced a Brazilian identification card and informed the officer that he did not have a driver’s license. Van Raalten noted that a records search revealed the individual had “numerous previous charges” for driving without a license, and subsequently he was placed under arrest.
“During an inventory search … a number of packages were found inside the vehicle with different addresses across town,” the deputy chief said. “They were seized as evidence in the belief that he stole them.”
According to a post on Facebook from the HPD, seven items with Hopkinton addresses were identified in the vehicle.
The HPD is working to get those packages to residents. The individual was released from custody Friday with a charge of unlicensed operation. Van Raalten said any further charges are pending as investigators continue looking into the matter.
The individual claimed he was a delivery driver subcontracted to deliver the packages in his vehicle, van Raalten reported. Investigators are seeking evidence from the suspect’s employer.
“We’re still trying to confirm he works for the company he works for and track down some sort of delivery tracking through the company … to prove a case against him on the theft,” he said.
The deputy chief noted that package thefts in Hopkinton are not a common occurrence. “I would not say it is a widespread issue in town,” he said.
