Hopkinton Today for Wednesday, Oct. 1: HALT to celebrate 30th anniversary with trail walk

by | Oct 1, 2025 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

HALT plans celebratory walk through Wiley Woods

Trail

The Hopkinton Area Land Trust will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a walk through Wiley Woods later this month.

“We were trying to figure out exactly how to celebrate this anniversary,” said HALT president Morrie Gasser. “We figured the nice thing to do would be to pick the very first property that HALT acquired.”

The trail walk is set for Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. Attendees will gather in the back of the parking lot of TJ’s Food & Spirits in Ashland and access the property from there.

HALT — which was founded in 1995 by a group of Hopkinton residents — acquired Wiley Woods in December 1997. Developer Ron Roux of Hallmark Companies donated over 15 acres of open space to HALT and a conservation restriction to the Sudbury Valley Trustees. The groups jointly monitor the property, Gasser explained.

The property is named for Judith Wiley, who was an early supporter of the trust and served on the Planning Board for many years.

Gasser said the walk may cover the whole trail, from TJ’s up to Frankland Road. He noted that a hike through Brook Hollow, which sits north of Wiley Woods, may be added if time permits. He encouraged attendees to dress appropriately for the conditions. In case of inclement weather, a postponement may be announced.

Gasser also encouraged residents to join other events HALT is hosting this month. The trust is sponsoring a mushroom walk at the Fruit Street Fields on Oct. 11, and its annual meeting is set for Oct. 22 at The Sanctuary in Woodville.
