Senior Center to bring back Repair Fair

The Hopkinton Senior Center’s annual Repair Fair will return this month to help residents fix items that might otherwise get thrown away.

“For most of the people who are bringing us items, these are items … that are on their last chance of being fixed,” said Jessica Fitch, assistant director of senior services at the Senior Center. “If we’re able to fix it, it’s fantastic.”

The fair on Sept. 27 is intended to help residents rehabilitate items in disrepair. The free event is staffed by volunteer repairers of all ages who come from the community at large, as well as the Hopkinton Lions Club and the Hopkinton Public Library. According to Fitch, it is a “really great outlet for our volunteer fixers who really get a chance to stretch those fix-it muscles.”

This year, Fitch anticipates about 12 or 13 repairers will volunteer their time. “These are folks who enjoy tinkering,” she said.

Items they can help with include general furniture repair, lamp rewiring, tool sharpening, small appliance repair and mending/sewing. Although many volunteers are seniors, Fitch noted that younger individuals have offered their skills before.

Fitch said that beyond the benefit of breathing life into a broken item, the fair helps keep useful items out of landfills. “Its a really great way for us as a community to look at our sustainability,” she said.

The fair will accept walk-ins, though residents are encouraged to contact the Senior Center to request repair assistance for a particular item and get more information on what items will be accepted for repair.
