Hopkinton Today for Wednesday, Sept. 3: MassDOT sets public hearing about I-495/I-90 project

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Hearing about I-495/I-90 interchange to cover milestones, public comment

An upcoming virtual public meeting held by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will provide updates on the Interstate 495/Interstate 90 Interchange Improvements Project.

The meeting, set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 16, will cover planned construction and traffic milestones. MassDOT teams are set to discuss the project’s progress and construction. Following the presentation, the meeting will open up for public comment and questions. Those looking to attend must register in advance on MassDOT’s registration page.

The ongoing I-495/I-90 interchange project is intended to address excessive traffic demands from both highways. According to information on the MassDOT Highway Division’s webpage, 75,000 vehicles travel through the interchange daily.

“The deficient geometry concentrates movements through the former toll plaza area, resulting in queuing onto the interstate mainlines and crash rates twice the statewide average,” the website states.

MassDOT’s goals for the project include reductions in crashes, congestion, queuing and travel time. The project began in October 2022. Stage 4 of the project — the final stage listed on the Highway Division website — is anticipated to begin August 2026 and finish in June 2027.
