Main Street Corridor Project update: Paving, curb work delayed

According to the latest update for the Main Street Corridor Project, paving has been delayed due to weather and subcontractor schedules.

A.F. Amorello & Sons previously provided the town with tentative plans to begin paving work Nov. 5-6. New dates have not been announced.

Once initiated, the paving will occur on the west end of the project and include all side streets within the project area. Paving limits extend from the Fire Station to just past the Wood Street intersection. Work may impact traffic and require lane and sidewalk closures along with potential detours. Per town policy, lane closures are limited to 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

To prepare for paving, all utility structures will be raised to final grade, side street transitions will be milled, driveway aprons will be prepared and the project area will be swept to ensure the roadway is clear. There will be a 2-inch lip at the end of all driveways in the paving area until final paving is completed.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will inspect the intermediate pavement as well, and electric message boards are to be set up to notify drivers.

Curb and sidewalk work at 30-36 Main Street, which was scheduled for this past week, has been rescheduled for the coming week. Buildings in the impacted area will remain open.

In the meantime, Verizon will continue transferring all of its overhead lines underground.

Weather and other existing conditions may change the projected work schedule. For the most up-to-date information, visit the town’s project website at hopkintonmainstreet.com.

Why are we shutting down lanes on West Main St during prime commuting and school pick up hours? It took 40 minutes to get from Price Chopper to HHS at 3 pm on a Wednesday due to lane closures.

The asphalt plants shut down when the weather gets too cold, are they going to miss the window to pave this season? If so, are we going to be able to plow Main St with all the raise structures?

How delayed is this project? If we are delayed, were there incentives for the contractor to meet the deadline that we won’t have to pay?

Is the project still within the projected budget (or within the contingency)?

Are lessons learned during this project being applied to the Charleswood project? During last week’s rain storm I observed silt from the Charleswood entrance along the roadside all the way down to Granite St where it was entering a wetland.

What’s with the construction management on these jobs?

    Shocking it’s delayed.
