More lane shifts, overnight ramp closures at I-90/I-495 interchange start Sunday

by | Aug 28, 2026 | News

According to a project update from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, traffic shifts on Interstate 90 eastbound and Interstate 495 northbound at the I-90/I-495 interchange in Hopkinton will go into effect next week. MassDOT also will continue overnight ramp closures through the week.

Traffic on I-90 eastbound will shift to its temporary alignment Sunday night. Temporary lane closures will begin at 8 p.m. and continue through 5 a.m. Monday morning while the shift is completed. The ramp from I-495 to I-90 will be reduced to one lane while the shift occurs.

At least one travel lane will remain open at all times. The alignment is expected to remain in place until mid-2027 to accommodate the third phase of the Railroad Bridge construction.

The shift on I-495 northbound will begin at 8 p.m. Monday night and continue through 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. The current lane closure on the highway will be removed as part of this work.

Traffic accessing I-90 (exit 58) will exit approximately a quarter mile south while the temporary alignment on I-495 is in place. It is expected to remain in place until November.

The I-495 southbound ramp to I-90 eastbound and westbound (Exit 58) will be closed overnight on Sunday. Traffic will be detoured to West Main Street (Exit 54A) to reverse direction back to I-495 northbound to access I-90 eastbound and westbound (Exit 58).

The I-90 eastbound ramp to I-495 northbound (Exit 106) will be closed overnight Monday-Thursday. While the closure is in place, traffic will be directed on to I-495 southbound to West Main Street in Hopkinton (Exit 54A) to reverse direction to I-495 northbound.

Finally, the I-495 northbound ramp to I-90 eastbound and westbound (Exit 58) also will be closed Monday-Thursday. Traffic will continue on I-495 northbound to Route 9 westbound (Exit 59B) in order to reverse direction and access I-90 via I-495 southbound.

Work hours during ramp closures are 11 p.m.-5 a.m. Appropriate signage and law enforcement details will be in place. Drivers should anticipate delays and exercise caution while traveling through work zones.

For more information on traffic conditions, drivers can visit the Mass511 website, which features travel times and real-time traffic.
