The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is implementing a new work zone on Interstate 495 this week that will change traffic patterns.
In a recent notice, MassDOT announced that a new traffic pattern will be established on I-495 northbound between Interstate 90 (Exit 58) and Route 9 (Exit 59) starting Wednesday night. The change is meant to accommodate a new work zone, and is part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvement Project.
Temporary lane closures will be in place as the zone is established, with at least one lane of I-495 northbound remaining open.
Lanes will split around the planned work area. The right and middle lanes will pass to the right, while the left lane will pass to the left. All three highway lanes will remain open. MassDOT advised that drivers accessing Route 9 eastbound and westbound (Exits 59A and 59B) utilize the right two lanes when traveling through the area.
The traffic pattern change will remain in place through the spring of 2026.
Appropriate signage and law enforcement details will be in place. Drivers should anticipate delays and exercise caution while traveling through work zones.
