The Cambridge City Council on Monday voted to offer its city manager position to Yi-An Huang, meaning Hopkinton Town Manager Norman Khumalo will remain at his current job, at least for the time being.
Khumalo was among the four finalists and was praised despite not receiving a vote from any of the nine council members.
“Norman Khumalo really impressed me with his style, his grace, his humility, his knowledge,” said Vice Mayor Alanna Mallon, who also credited Khumalo for his leadership skills.
Huang currently serves as the executive director of Boston Medical Center Hospital Clinical Operations. He is a 15-year Cambridge resident.
The other two finalists were Iram Farooq, who serves as assistant city manager for the Community Development Department in Cambridge, and Cheryl Watson Fisher, Chelsea’s city solicitor and a partner in the Cambridge based law firm Galluccio & Watson, LLP.
Khumalo previously was a candidate for city manager in Watertown, but the position was offered to one of the other three finalists last month.
