A tractor-trailer struck a telephone pole Tuesday afternoon on Pond Street, injuring the driver and taking down utility lines.

According to a police advisory, Pond Street was to be closed from Erika Drive to 20 Pond Street for the rest of the day. Drivers were advised to find an alternate route.

The incident happened at 3:15 p.m., according to Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty. He said that Hopkinton Police Department officers were still at the scene as of 4 p.m.

“I know that the accident happened at 12 Pond Street,” Daugherty confirmed. “I have been checking the scanner, and the police have been at the scene for about an hour. One driver was taken to UMass Memorial in Worcester. I don’t know anything about any injuries.”

HFD Lt. John Sheridan provided further details on the incident, which he said “was called in at exactly 3:15 p.m.”

“What happened was that the tractor part of the tractor-trailer struck the utility pole on Pond Street,” he explained. “My ambulance crew got to the scene quickly and was able to transfer the driver out of the vehicle when I got there. I was involved in assessing the situation for any dangers, including fuel leaks. It will take a while to clean the scene up.”

He added that the driver was able to walk to the side of the road and speak with emergency medical personnel as they were preparing to take him to the hospital, but he did not speak with the driver directly.

“Crews from Eversource and Verizon are on the scene now,” Sheridan continued. “The live power lines are affecting the speed with which we can clear the accident scene. Pond Street is obviously closed. At this time, the situation is pretty fluid, so I can’t tell you when it will be open to traffic.”

He added that “a tow truck used for heavy equipment” was in the process of trying to remove the tractor.
