The collapse of a wall of the former Hopkinton Drug building onto Main Street during demolition Wednesday afternoon resulted in a disruption of traffic but no injuries.

Hopkinton Police received a 911 call at 2:43 p.m. that the south-facing wall of Hopkinton Drug fell on to the sidewalk and spilled onto the edge of Main Street. Police and fire personnel responded to the scene.

Hopkinton Fire Department crews used specialized video/audio equipment to determine if anyone might have been trapped under the rubble. Shortly after 4 p.m., HFD Chief Gary Daugherty confirmed that no one had been injured.

Crews worked through the afternoon to clear debris from the sidewalk, closing the westbound lanes of Main Street until work was complete. One of the two lanes was reopened around 4:30 p.m. after the wall was moved back onto the building site.

Demolition started before 9 a.m. on the northern side of the building, which abutted a parking lot. The south wall — the last to be taken down — stood right up against the Main Street sidewalk, leaving little room for anything to go wrong during the demolition.

When the wall fell, it knocked over at least one street sign, as well as the walk signal by the intersection with Cedar Street. Town Manager Elaine Lazarus, who walked down the street from Town Hall after hearing about the accident, said the construction company would be held responsible for the damaged items.

Hopkinton Public Schools Superintendent Evan Bishop also was on the scene, as he had been driving to one of the schools to check in on the first day of classes when he saw the commotion. The accident happened just after the high school and middle school ended their days and shortly before the elementary schools’ dismissal time. A number of students walked past the site and paused to check it out, while police directed the heavy traffic.

Boston-based Parsons Commercial Group, along with Brendon Properties, is redeveloping the property into a multifamily mixed-use development. The complex includes 48-52 Main Street and an abutting property at 6 Cedar Street, and will have an attached parking garage.

Crews erected a fence and water socks around the property in early August. According to the Building Department, the developers received a demolition permit on July 17. A worker at the site said construction on the mixed-use development is anticipated to take 16-18 months.
