Boston Marathon organizers not yet able to set date for 2021 race

by | Dec 29, 2020 | Featured: News, News

The Boston Athletic Association announced Tuesday that it will not be able to confirm a date for the 2021 Boston Marathon until “early 2021.”

The BAA announced in October that the race would not be held on its traditional date of the third Monday in April and will be postponed “until at least the fall of 2021” due to the pandemic. At the time, the BAA said it hoped to announce a date before the end of 2020.

“Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, we will not be able to confirm a fall Boston Marathon date until early 2021,” the organization said in a statement Tuesday. “The BAA will continue to work with city and state officials in preparation for a safe return to in-person racing in the fall.”

The race, which annually brings about 30,000 people — runners, volunteers, organizers, security, fans and others — to Hopkinton for the start, was postponed from April to September this year and then transitioned to a 10-day virtual experience, in which runners ran on their own and submitted their times.
