Maria Pinto

Maria Goncalves (Costa) Pinto, 101, of Milford passed away peacefully surrounded by her immediate family on Feb. 15. She was the wife of her predeceased husband, Antonio T. Pinto.

Maria was born in Donões Montalegre, Portugal, on Nov. 11, 1919, the daughter of the late Jose Goncalves Costa and Ursula Goncalves de Igreja. She was raised in Portugal, married in November 1957, and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1966, residing here ever since. She was proud to become a U.S. citizen in 1973.

A strongly devoted Catholic, Maria was a parishioner of Saint Mary of the Assumption Church for over 55 years, never missing services until she was physically unable to attend Mass, but always giving daily prayers to our Lord and being particularly devoted to our Blessed Mother of Fatima. Maria enjoyed cooking and gardening. She worked crafting leather textiles at Porter and Milford Shoe Co. until her retirement in 1983.

In addition to her loving husband, Maria is predeceased by her brothers Monsignor João Costa of Vila Real, Portugal, Antonio Costa of Donões, Portugal, and Joaquim Costa of Milford. Maria is survived by her brother Jose G. Costa of Milford, her three sons, Jose D. Pinto and wife Dianne M. Pinto of Milford, Antonio L. Pinto of Hopkinton, and Gino A. Pinto and wife Grace Pinto of Milford. Maria is also survived by eight grandchildren: Michael A. Pinto of Sunnyvale, California, David J. Pinto of Madrid, Spain, Mark C. Pinto of Milford, Sabrina M. Pinto of Milford, Diego A. Pinto of Hopkinton, Jason G. Pinto of Milford, Nina G. Pinto of Milford and Daniel A. Pinto of Milford, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Consigli Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water St., Milford, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary of the Assumption Church, 17 Winter St., Milford. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery on Cedar Street.
