Overturned propane truck closes Spring Street

On Nov. 8 at approximately 4:30 p.m. the Hopkinton Communications Center received multiple 911 calls of a truck overturned on Spring Street. Police and Fire resources were dispatched and found a propane fuel truck on its side in the area of 176 Spring St. Police, fire and corporate resources were on scene and some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

On Friday, Nov. 9, Spring Street remained closed from Upton to Snowy Owl and Pond Street was closed from Steward to Lyford Street.

In the end, crews worked for more than 25 hours at the incident. There was an active leak of the product and it was a lengthy process to unload the truck. Product was transferred to another truck and the remainder was burned off in flare stacks. There were no nearby hydrants so 2,500 feet of hose was used to supply water to control the vapors. A tanker shuttle was also established on the Upton side of the incident. The driver was transported to a local hospital.

The Westborough, Upton, Ashland and Hopedale Fire Departments provided mutual aid as well as the district Haz Mat team.
