Select Board OK’s moving Town Meeting to May 8, Town Election to May 22

by | Mar 23, 2021 | Featured: News, News

At a brief meeting Tuesday night, the Select Board unanimously approved moving Annual Town Meeting back five days to Saturday, May 8, at 9 a.m. It will be held at the football field behind Hopkinton High School. Annual Town Election also will be moved back five days, to Saturday, May 22. The election will remain at Hopkinton Middle School’s Brown Gym.

Town manager Norman Khumalo said the town was able to confirm that a sizable tent will be available for Town Meeting.

Town moderator Tom Garabedian said the intent is to hold votes on every warrant item on May 8.

“We will be working toward conducting the meeting in a single day,” he said. “We have some contingencies that if things run long that we can accommodate it either later that weekend or the following weekend. But the goal is to try to wrap things up on [May 8], starting relatively early in the morning and going as long as necessary to get all of our business done.”

Hopkinton High School is planning to have a graduation car parade on May 22, the same day as the election. Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone said the two could coexist, noting that the parade — which debuted last year — shouldn’t last more than an hour, while the polls are open all day. Additionally, a high number of mail-in ballots is expected.

In other Select Board news, the board unanimously approved the hirings of Kyle Boucher as water technician, Renee Chen as finance administrative assistant and Kelechi Obika as health services agent.

The board also voted to waive the hiring freeze in order to hire a custodian to replace an individual in the Facilities Department who resigned.
