Schools Notebook: HHS duo honored at Invention Convention

Hopkinton High School students Nicolette Buonora and Lauren Strechay won two awards at the sixth annual Invention Convention U.S. Nationals, hosted by The Henry Ford Museum online this spring. The girls were waiting for the results from the global level of competition, in which they were invited to compete.

The duo invented a flashlight for police that has a “battery swap” system, so when one set of batteries is used up there is another set to keep the LED light working.

In addition to winning the Most Energy Sustainable Award, the project was named a Patent Application winner, which includes funds for a U.S. patent application.

HMS robotics team takes top honor

Hopkinton Middle School Robotics’ Titans Team 1715T won the Excellence Award for the Mars Division at VEX Worlds in May. The Excellence Award is the highest honor awarded by VEX to the best overall performance by a team.

College Honors: Brown presents at Lasell

Abigail Brown, a Lasell University student from Hopkinton, presented at the university’s Spring Symposium research showcase, “The Invention of Now.”

Brown presented the latest issue of Polished, a student-run magazine focused on Boston’s fashion and cultural scene. Polished has received numerous awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in its Gold Circle and Silver Circle categories and is recognized as one of the leading collegiate publications in the country. Brown was one of the issue’s stylists.

The Spring Connected Learning Symposium is one of two annual research symposia held at Lasell University. Student presentations provide scholarly insights into a variety of industry topics, and showcase practical skills and career competencies across those industries. …

Ben Powers was assigned to the USS Leyte Gulf at Virginia’s Norfolk Naval Base for his first summer of naval training. Upon completion of his training, Powers will return to Norwich University, where he will begin his junior year as an electrical engineering major and serve as a cadet sergeant in the corps, while also playing football for the school. …

At Bates College, Alex Kovacs and Nicky Desai were named to the dean’s list. …

Tatyana Markovich was named to the dean’s list at the University of New England. …

Parker Petruney (business) and Samantha Riley (international relations) earned their degrees from Saint Anselm College.
