Artwork by Hopkinton’s Rosie Finn was named best in show at the 14th annual Arts in Bloom show that opened June 4 and runs through July 18 in the Lotvin Family Gallery at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts.
Finn submitted a 5-inch spike-heeled shoe that was completely covered in artificial vegetation, titled “Old Things New.”
“ ‘Old Things New’ by Rosie Finn is a playful take on a floral sculpture,” guest juror Christine O’Donnell said. “The artist takes what one imagines is a cast-off high-heel and gives it new life and vibrancy. Every part of the shoe sculpture is meticulously covered with green leaves, giving a base over which Finn adds her blooms; demonstrating the levels of detail and attention she gives to her work. Color and species selection, with brighter blossoms towards the front and back, also give a dynamic feel to the piece, as does the detail of moss, a tiny bloom and the tendril of a fern added to the bottom of the heel. The piece demands the viewer’s attention with both its beauty and execution.”
Finn was selected from among the 32 artists who entered pieces.
“It was certainly difficult to decide what to choose,” said O’Donnell, who operates Beacon Gallery in Boston. “There was a wealth of high-quality work.”
Added HCA director and show organizer Kris Waldman: “We were swamped — 174 works of art were submitted for review. That’s up almost 40 percent from last year.”
Other Hopkinton artists whose work is being displayed include Sandra Delbridge, Steven Doherty, Catherine Howe, Caroline Kelly, Julia Linnell, J. Gina Lee Marques, Cheryl Rose and John Sherffius.
