An unannounced detour for work on Main Street caused headaches for drivers Wednesday.

According to the town’s professional project specialist, Michelle Murdock, A.F. Amorello & Sons diverted eastbound drivers from Main Street to a detour up Pleasant Street and across Maple Street to Hayden Rowe without properly notifying town officials.

“Somehow they did a detour without getting it approved,” said Murdock. “Neither the town nor police were made aware.”

Murdock explained that Amorello had scheduled work this week as part of the Main Street Corridor Project to raise castings on the east side of the project. The work must be done ahead of final paving. She also noted that the same detour will be put in place when paving occurs, but that plan has to be submitted in writing.

Wednesday’s unexpected detour was a one-off event, Murdock said. She noted Amorello should have completed raising the castings on Wednesday and did not anticipate the company would need an additional day to complete the work.

Murdock added that, going forward, the town has requested that Amorello submit any detour plans in advance so proper notice can be given.
