Hopkinton’s Farrell named to Olympic hockey roster

Hopkinton’s Sean Farrell was named to the U.S. men’s hockey team for the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing next month.

The roster was announced Thursday night. The NHL decided not to send its players this year, which opened the door for players such as the 20-year-old Farrell, who is in his first year at Harvard University. He has 19 points (8 goals, 11 assists) in 13 games, helping the Crimson to a record of 8-4-1.

“Competing on the Olympic stage is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Farrell said in an interview posted on the Harvard University hockey Twitter page. “Being able to represent the United States is very special anytime that you can do it.”

Last year, Farrell was named Player of the Year in the United States Hockey League, the nation’s top junior league, after recording 101 points (29 goals, 72 assists) in 53 games with the Chicago Steel.

A 5-foot-9, 175-pound left wing, Farrell was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

He played two seasons (2017-19) with the U.S. National Team Development Program and was on the team that captured the bronze medal at the 2019 Under-18 Men’s World Championship, picking up two assists in seven games.

The Olympics are scheduled to run from Feb. 4-20.
