Select Board finalizes Boston Marathon charity number distribution

by | Jan 18, 2022 | Featured: News, News

The Select Board held a meeting Tuesday to decide which local organizations would receive a charity number for the 2022 Boston Marathon. The town received 50 numbers from the Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the historic race.

Town Manager Norman Khumalo noted that last year, despite tough economic times and the race being rescheduled to October, local organizations were able to raise $294,000.

“There are many reasons why Hopkinton is a great community, and one of those reasons is the work that is done by the local civic organizations,” Khumalo said. “In its infinite wisdom, the Select Board several years back decided to put together a policy that lays out the framework for doing this work. In that policy it is stated that once every year at the appropriate time the Select Board defines the process for distributing the numbers. The intent is to have a process that fair, that is transparent and that is advantageous to local organizations.”

After some discussion, the board decided to award numbers to the following town departments: Hopkinton Police Department (8 numbers), Hopkinton Fire Department (1), Hopkinton Senior Center (1), Hopkinton Public Library (1), Hopkinton Marathon Committee (5) and Veterans Celebration Committee (1).

The following 33 local organizations were awarded one number each: Hopkinton Women’s Club, Mental Health Collaborative, Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, Hopkinton Garden Club, Hopkinton PTO, Live for Evan, Keep Smilin’ for Abbie Foundation, Michael Lisnow Respite Center, Hopkinton Girls Youth Lacrosse, Hopkinton High School Robotics, Project Just Because, Hopkinton Tax Relief Committee, Baypath Humane Society, Hopkinton Boys Youth Lacrosse, Canty’s Underdog Scholarship Fund, Hopkinton Middle School (courtyard project), Dignity Matters, National Brain Tumor Society, Hopkinton Public Library Friends, Friends of Hopkinton Seniors, Friends of Hopkinton SEPAC, Demons Youth Hockey Association, Hopkinton Historical Society, Hopkinton Lions Club, Hopkinton Education Foundation, Sophie’s Hope Foundation, Hopkinton Little League, Friends of Hopkinton Inc., Hopkinton Emergency Fund, Sharon Timlin Memorial Event, Hopkinton Music Association, Hopkinton Food Pantry and Hopkinton Freedom Team.

The only two applicants not to receive a number were Hopkinton High School and the Hopkinton Public Schools, Office of the Superintendent, who both applied as town departments.
