Hopkinton High School students captured 31 state-level awards in the 2022 Scholastic Writing Awards competition.

Senior Kevin Gu led the way with 10 awards, including an American Voices Nominee, an honor bestowed on the top five writing submissions in the state, for his poem titled “georgia, atlanta [ululation].”

Gu received a gold key award for three poems, a silver key for two poems, and honorable mention for two other poems as well as a writing portfolio.

Other students recognized included freshman Daniel Applebaum (silver key for poetry), senior Mary Billeter (gold key for flash fiction and honorable mention for short story), freshman Evan Fitzpatrick (honorable mention for critical essay), junior Owen Fitzpatrick (honorable mention for poetry), junior Brian Gu (honorable mention for short story), junior Shelby Jones (honorable mention for poetry), junior Maggie Joyce (silver key for short story), junior Ishita Khurana (gold key and silver key for critical essays), senior Korbin Alexei Munn (gold key for personal essay and memoir), freshman Anoushka Nair (silver key and honorable mention for personal essay and memoirs), junior Mathias Niss (silver key for poetry), senior Jenny Rock (honorable mention for critical essay), junior Olivia Stacey (honorable mentions for poetry and personal essay and memoir), senior Afnaan Syed (honorable mention for critical essay), sophomore YeonSeo Yoo (gold key for poetry) and senior Grace Young (honorable mention for short story and silver key for flash fiction).

Hopkinton students also had success in the Scholastic Art Awards competition, earning 29 awards.

Senior Cindy Yang won four gold keys: two for drawing and illustration, one for art portfolio and one for digital art. Yang also won a silver key for art portfolio and an honorable mention for drawing and illustration.

Gold key-winning submissions from both competitions are being reviewed for national medal consideration, with winners to be announced March 23, and will be shared at the Massachusetts Scholastic Art and Writing Awards regional online exhibition.

HHS magazine best in nation

The Hopkinton High School literary magazine Marginal was named the Most Outstanding High School Literary Magazine for 2021 by the American Scholastic Press Association. Six high school magazines across the country were recognized, with Marginal earning the top spot for schools with 1,000-1,700 students. …

The Hopkinton High School Art Department Honors Exhibition is underway at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. Public viewing lasts until March 6, and a closing reception will be held March 3 from 6-7 p.m. Artists featured include Kevin Gu, Deeksha Vaidyanathan, Brooke Best, Korbin Munn, Annalise Curl, Connor Grady, Josh Blangeard, An-wen Huang, Avery Ravech and Sofia Luce. …

Five students were selected to represent HHS at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association 68th All-State Music Festival on March 5 at Symphony Hall in Boston: Jordyn Ahlstrom-Hall, Abigail Baskin, Luciano Duca, Carolina Ozmun and Hana Ruran. …

The HHS Science Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, March 1. On Wednesday, March 2, from 2:30-3 p.m., there will be a celebration and the awarding of prizes. (Editor’s note: This has been updated to reflect a change in the date for the awards presentation.)

Robotics teams shine

Hopkinton High School robotics Team 2602B won the Design Award at the VEX Robotics Tipping Point Tournament in Framingham on Feb. 5 and advanced to next month’s Southern New England regional championship.

HHS hosted a VEX Robotics and REC Foundation event in late January, and three Hopkinton teams earned awards. Team 2602H won the Excellence Award, Team 2602A was the Skills Champion and Team 2602K won the Judges Award.

Local collegians honored

The University of New Hampshire’s fall dean’s list includes a number of Hopkinton residents. Jessica Mellor, Eliza Westbury, Isabella Houley, Ivy Gogolin and Mollie Mahoney received highest honors. Helen Aghababian, Alexandra Lee, Lia Brossi, Elizabeth Liberta, Gregory Schaefer and Samuel Lozeau earned high honors. Adara Groman, Jenna Willwerth, Peter Mitchell, Galen Graham and Jonathan Goldberg were recognized with honors. …

At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Ryan Hawkins, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, Patrick Mejia, a junior majoring in computer science, Aabid Peermohammed, a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering, Alopa Waje, a freshman majoring in biomedical engineering, and Oliver Yasuna, a freshman majoring in computer science, were named to the dean’s list.

Also at WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. This past fall, Mejia completed a project titled “Expanding Business and Crafting Partnerships,” while junior Alexander Guerra competed a project titled “Restoration of Panama’s Juan Diaz River Watershed.”
