HHS Sports Roundup: Girls basketball rolls in tourney opener; Powers wins another title

The Hopkinton High School girls basketball team opened postseason play by crushing visiting Malden, 61-29, on Wednesday in a Division 1 preliminary round game.

Hopkinton (9-12), the 25th seed, next will play at eighth-seeded Chelmsford on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Malden, the 40th seed, ends its season at 9-12.

Jessie Ianelli opened the scoring with a 3-pointer to start the rout. Hopkinton led 18-0 just under seven minutes into the game and 20-2 after the first quarter. The onslaught continued in the second quarter, with the hosts taking a 32-2 lead before starting to work in some of the younger players. It was 43-10 at the half, and Malden never challenged in the second half.

Kiki Fossbender led a balanced Hillers attack with nine points. Lauren Cho scored eight, while Ianelli and Charlotte Holden each had seven. Ten Hillers recorded at least two points. …

In other HHS sports news, senior Kate Powers won the weight throw at the New England Invitational with a school-record toss of 49 feet, 8.25 inches.
