At its meeting Monday night, the Parks & Recreation Commission discussed updates on the Fruit Street fields replacement project, property requests and summer programming.

Parks & Recreation Director Jay Guelfi reported that the town’s legal counsel approved the Fruit Street turf replacement bid documents with some minor changes. The bids were released last week, and the town is advertising this week. “Hopefully we get great bids and we can start … [with] the approval phase at Town Meeting and then the construction phase following,” Guelfi said.

Guelfi also reported that the department will be spending about $3,000 on repairing the current turf, work that might begin this week. Some portions of the current field may be reused to surface the lacrosse wall area.

Property requests approved

The Hopkinton Board of Health requested and was granted use of the Town Common on Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a health and wellness fair. The event will feature health information, music, entertainment and food trucks.

The Woodville Rod & Gun Club requested and was granted use of Pratt’s Pond for its annual Kids Fishing Derby on May 14 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a rain date of May 15.

The Hopkinton High School Robotics Team requested use of EMC Park for a fundraiser to help cover costs for the group’s trip to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas in May. The family-friendly event may include games, music and face painting. The commission approved the request contingent upon approval from Hopkinton Little League.

Summer programming registration and revenue continue to outpace fiscal year 2019 by about 15 percent, Guelfi reported. “It’s good news that people are engaged and happy with what we’re offering,” he said. The department also will be offering a new filmmaking class for kids ages 10-14 in an attempt to provide more activity options amid STEM program waitlists. …

An irrigation system is coming to the dog park, hopefully by the end of the month, Guelfi said. A lawn hydrant also will be installed to pump out water. The park’s gazebo has yet to be installed. …

The commission voted to authorize Guelfi to lease automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at Fruit Street, Sandy Beach and EMC Park.
