Hopkinton Today: Wednesday, Sept. 14

by | Sep 14, 2022 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo and video of the day.

Leading off the Select Board roundup, Town Manager Norman Khumalo indicated the Main Street Corridor Project continues to progress. “Substantial work has been completed,” Khumalo said. “We’re now focusing on doing the work that will help us wind down ahead of the winter.”

With the pandemic waning, the Board of Health at its meeting Monday night discussed moving away from its focus on COVID-19 and toward developing a strategic plan that will reflect Hopkinton’s overall health objectives.

As part of the town’s work on developing a plan for a potential replacement for Elmwood School, there will be an initial community forum on Monday, Sept. 19, from 6-7:30 p.m.

For Hopkinton High School girls soccer coach Tom Skiba, it’s all about the process. His expectations for his team coming into the 2022 campaign are similar to every season: win games, get to the state tournament and compete in the always-challenging Tri-Valley League.

Hopkinton High School junior Brooke Birtwistle will continue her standout soccer career at the Division 1 collegiate level in two seasons when she attends Purdue University.

Town meetings tonight include the Parks & Recreation Commission (5:30), Elementary School Building Committee (6), Housing Authority (6), Board of Appeals (7), Cultural Council (7) and Commissioners of Trust Funds (7).

Tales from a Townie: Dick Byers

I hate doing this — writing these memorials — but I guess it goes with the territory when you are in your mid-80s. However, I feel it is an honor and privilege to be able to do so for my lifelong friends. I met Dick Byers 69 years ago, the day we entered first...
