Tomorrow, students and professionals will gather at Hopkinton High School to discuss one of the most powerful organs in the human body: the brain.

The school is hosting a TEDx event that will cover various topics in neuroscience. The event will take place from 5:30-8 p.m.

“There are nine speakers, each focusing on a different part of neurology,” said organizer and HHS sophomore Sahasra Charkam.

Topics to be covered include the impact of stress on memory, the chemical composition of sleep, Parkinson’s Disease and sex/gender-based neurological disorders.

Presenters range from high schoolers to leading industry professionals. According to Charkam, the list of presenters includes several Harvard graduates and the chief of neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

“It’s a wide range of people,” she noted.

Charkam set up the event with fellow sophomore Tejaswini Pitchuka for the school’s Health Occupations Students of America-Future Health Professionals group.

“We decided it was something special and new we could bring to the high school,” Charkam said.

Charkam said she was inspired to apply for a TEDx license after watching a friend give a TEDx talk of her own. She and Pitchuka settled on the theme of neuroscience after doing separate research on Parkinson’s.

“During our research, we learned there’s a lot of neurology not out in the world yet,” she said. “We thought it would be a good topic.”

The audience in the school’s auditorium will be capped at 100 people, but an overflow viewing room will be set up in the library. Beyond presentations, the event will feature an inflatable brain provided by Hopkinton Organizing for Prevention that attendees can walk through and explore.

Those interested in attending can fill out this Google Form to get tickets. Because it is a licensed event, videos of the talks will be available on the TEDx YouTube channel after the event has concluded.
