DPW feedback needed before before ADA evaluation forum can move forward

The Commission on Disability on Thursday agreed it needed more time to put together a public forum to review a recently completed ADA self-evaluation and transition plan.
At its meeting in September, the commission heard from representatives of Capital Strategic Solutions, which was contracted by the Department of Public Works to put the plan together. After the presentation, DPW director Kerry Reed recommended holding a public forum to discuss the findings of the study with residents. Members agreed to split the meeting into two. One would be just a forum to review the findings, while the second would involve walking public spaces that would be impacted by the proposed accessibility improvements.
The public forum initially was scheduled for Oct. 28, while the walkthrough was set for Nov. 7.
At Thursday’s meeting, members began by reviewing what information they would be presenting at the forum. They also worried about ensuring people would attend.
“People, unless they have anybody they’re related to … that has a disability, they’re not going to care,” chair Nancy “Punky” Drawe suggested.
“It might not be a huge audience,” member Nancy Cavanaugh agreed. She said she would work on socializing it with the School Committee, of which she also is a member. Cavanaugh said it would be good to let the Special Education Parent Advisory Council know about the forum, as well as other town organizations such as the Council on Aging.
Due to additional confusion about what information the commission would present on versus the DPW, members agreed more clarification was needed from Reed.
Cavanaugh said she did not want the commission to jump ahead and advertise something it may not be ready for.
“Are we waiting to hear from Kerry, or do we just tell Kerry we’re not ready yet?” Drawe asked.
“I’d tell Kerry we’re not ready yet,” replied member Pamela Loch. Members agreed, voting unanimously that the proposed Oct. 28 public forum date was too soon. Drawe agreed to follow up with Reed.
