A Hopkinton man was in critical condition Sunday night after he and his dog were struck on Wood Street by an SUV hours earlier on a rainy evening, according to a Hopkinton Police Department statement.
The HPD received a report at approximately 6:06 p.m. that a pedestrian and a dog were struck by a motor vehicle in the area of 280 Wood Street. Police and the Hopkinton Fire Department’s EMS responded to the scene.
“Upon arrival, officers determined that a 79-year-old Hopkinton man and his dog had been struck by a 2018 Nissan Rogue operated by a 29-year-old Northborough woman,” stated Interim Police Chief Scott van Raalten. “The man was transported to UMass Medical Center in Worcester by Hopkinton Fire/EMS, where he is currently in critical condition. The dog was taken to Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine by a neighbor for treatment.”
The operator of the Nissan remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation, he added, and no charges were immediately filed. The Hopkinton Police Detective Unit, with the CEMLEC Accident Reconstruction Team, is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Wood Street was closed between Fruit Street and Winter Street for the investigation. Motorists were advised to avoid the area until 11 p.m., when Wood Street was expected to reopen.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information, including dash camera or doorbell camera footage, is asked to contact the Hopkinton Police Department Detective Unit at 508-497-3401 or detective@hopkintonpd.org.
Added van Raalten: “The Hopkinton Police Department asks that the community keep the victim and his family in their thoughts.”
A Facebook post from the Hopkinton Firefighters Local 3772 union called the accident “serious.” It stated that “advanced airway management” was utilized.
“This is the 13th call for service for today’s duty group and the 2nd time off duty members have been recalled from home for station coverage,” it noted.
