Sports Roundup: State tournament schedules released; track athletes, wrestlers, skiers shine

Hopkinton High School’s basketball and hockey teams are preparing for postseason play following this weekend’s release of the schedules for the state tournaments.

Girls basketball is seeded 17th in Division 1 and will visit 16th-seeded Lincoln-Sudbury (16-4) in the first round on Friday at 6 p.m.

Boys basketball (13-7) is seeded 26th in Division 2 and will host 39th-seeded Somerville (10-10) in a preliminary-round game on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The winner plays at seventh-seeded Masconomet (18-1) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The girls hockey co-op team (10-8) is seeded 20th in Division 2 and begins postseason play on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. with a first-round game at 13th-seeded Medfield (11-7) at Canton Ice House.

Boys hockey (9-9) is seeded 19th in Division 2 and visits 14th-seeded Falmouth (9-12) for a first-round game on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at Falmouth Ice Arena.

Hillers’ Finnegan wins 2-mile at D2 meet

Hopkinton High School track and field standout Sean Finnegan won the 2-mile race at the state Division 2 meet on Feb. 13 at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston.

Finnegan won in a time of 9 minutes, 39.87 seconds, almost 4 seconds ahead of the next runner.

Also for the HHS boys, Harry Millar took second in the 55-meter hurdles, Logan Sullivan was second in the high jump, and the 4×200 relay team took eighth.

At this weekend’s Meet of Champions, Finnegan took sixth in the 2-mile, Sullivan was fourth in the high jump, and Tarun Karthick Prasanna was fourth in the weight throw.

On the girls side, Josie Hopkins finished third in the 55 hurdles, Emily Miller was third in the high jump, Elyse Srodawa captured fourth in the 2-mile, Kaelyn Faber took fifth in the shot put, and the 4×800 relay team took seventh.

At his weekend’s Meet of Champions, Faber took third in the weight throw.

HHS wrestlers, skiers advance

The HHS wrestling team finished sixth at the Division 2 Central sectional meet on Feb. 15.

Five Hillers advanced to the Division 2 state championship: Aaron Butkus (third at the sectional meet), Edwin Xiao (fourth), Finn Durocher (fourth), Patrick Murphy (fourth) and Jacob Desilets (fourth). Also faring well at the sectional meet were Kyle Tedstone (fifth), Stephen Moody (sixth) and Caleb Newman (sixth).

This weekend, Desilets took fourth at 285 pounds and advanced to the All-State Meet. Butkus finished eighth at 144 pounds. …

In alpine skiing, Lucie Mato, Lila Mato, Barry O’Brien and Patrick Meehan qualified for the state meet this Tuesday at Berkshire East.

Korbey 3v3 tourney March 23

The annual Mary Korbey 3v3 basketball tournament is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Hopkinton High School and Hopkinton Middle School.

The event supports the Mary Korbey Scholarship Fund. It honors Mary (Marquedant) Korbey, who was a standout athlete at HHS who went on to become a beloved youth sports coach in town. She passed away in 2015 following a long battle with cancer.

There are divisions for boys and girls players in Grades 3 through high school, as well adults/seniors.
