Big-hearted ‘Big Lu’ looking for a forever home

by | Sep 27, 2018 | Featured

Big Lu

It’s widely professed adage that dogs are man’s best friend. In the case of Big Lu, a male bully breed mix, possibly with some boxer in him, he may have just as much, if not more, admiration for his saviors at the nonprofit, no-kill shelter Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton.

Big Lu’s life hasn’t always been sunny, though you’d never know it by his sweet demeanor.

“I can’t say enough about Big Lu, he is a poster child for resilience,” shared Elizabeth Jefferis, executive director at Baypath.

During the first year of his life, Big Lu faced incredible adversity. After he suffered significant physical and emotional trauma, animal control seized him from his abusers and held him before partnering with Baypath to place him into a nurturing foster home. Big Lu has never looked back.

Lu is a great house dog who does not need to be crated. Quiet and mellow, he loves his toys, especially his “stuffies,” and will be the first to offer up a snuggle to anyone who wants to lounge on the couch and invites him up. He has already won over the hearts of Baypath’s staff and volunteers who look forward to matching him with a family who will keep be able give him the love he deserves!

He would be a great fit for an adult home looking for a loyal and fun companion. Jefferis explained he is very good about going to his safe space when he is nervous but he will need someone who is patient and willing to give him time to settle in.

“Understandably, he has some fear issues when meeting new people; however, he wants to trust  badly, he just needs a little time to understand that no one is going to hurt him anymore,” she added.

Adoption fees do not cover animal transport, and foster homes are run by volunteers. However, Baypath foots the bill with donations helping to offset the cost.

Jefferis noted that she and the Baypath staff and volunteers are so grateful to those who do donate to help the no-kill shelter save animals and help them find their forever homes.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to be part of a community that comes together to help dogs who may be tougher to adopt. We’re confident that together we’ll find a wonderful home for Big Lu,” Jefferis said. “Until that day, our dedicated staff and volunteers will be there to provide him the love and care he so richly deserves.”

In 2017 alone, Baypath took in 1,160 animals, with 1,081 of them being adopted. If you would like to meet any of the other cats and dogs that are waiting their forever homes you can visit the Hopkinton shelter every day of the week except for Tuesdays from 11:30-4:30 p.m.

Baypath will be hosting the ninth annual Paws and Claws 5K on Sunday, Oct. 14, at DCR Hopkinton State Park. A link to register is on the organization’s website, www.baypathhumane.org.
