Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Girl Scouts to host trunk or treat Sunday

Hopkinton Girl Scout Troop 72361 will host a trunk or treat event at Marathon School this weekend, kicking off a number of Halloween events in town over the next few weeks.

According to troop leader Cristina Medeiros, the girls are taking over the event this year from the Hopkinton Community Partnership, run by Heather Smith. “[Smith] is not able to do it, so she asked us to take over,” said Medeiros, adding that the troop consistently has participated in trunk or treat over the years.

Trunk or treating will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday in the Marathon School parking lot. Admission is $20 per family, and the event will not be a drive-through as in previous years.

“We’re opting to do a walk-through,” Medeiros explained. “It’ll be a little more of an experience.”

Also new this year is an early entrance at 1:45 p.m. for families looking for a sensory-friendly experience.

A total of 27 trunks will be open, decorated and ready for visitors on Sunday, Medeiros said. She noted that the Hopkinton police and fire departments will be in attendance, as will the Department of Public Works, local businesses, families and high school clubs.

All proceeds raised from the event will help the Girl Scouts fund their Gold Awards — the highest award they can receive. Medeiros noted that 10 girls are eligible to complete their Gold Awards this year.

“The girls are in the very beginning process,” she said. “They’re exploring what their problem [to solve] is going to be and working with community partners.”

Another Halloween celebration in Hopkinton includes a family event called Monster Mash hosted by the Hopkinton Parent Teacher Organization on Oct. 25. Aimed at children in pre-K through Grade 5, the event will feature a DJ, glow store and games. Tickets are required for entry and can be purchased on the HPTO website. It will be held at Marathon School.

On Oct. 31, the Hopkinton Public Library will host trick or treating all day. Children are welcome to dress up and get a treat at each of the library’s service desks. There also will be a meet and greet where kids can have their picture taken with Rumi from “KPop Demon Hunters” along with Wayfinder from 10:30 a.m.-noon.

The Sustainable Green Committee hopes to encourage recycling by offering a pumpkin compost smash in the Hopkinton High School parking lot behind the Hopkinton Center for the Arts on Nov. 1. Residents are encouraged to bring their jack-o’-lanterns and unpainted pumpkins to smash into the Black Earth carnival truck to be composted. Pumpkins should be free of paint, glitter, candles and other decorations.
