Addy Walls pitched a three-hitter and collected two hits of her own to lead the Hopkinton High School softball team to a 7-1 victory over visiting Marblehead on Wednesday in the second round of the Division 2 state tournament.

The second-seeded Hillers (19-3) next will host Tri-Valley League rival Westwood in the quarterfinals. Westwood (15-4), seeded seventh, knocked off 10th-seeded Malden Catholic on Wednesday by a score of 4-3.

Walls, who recorded six strikeouts, did not need much support in this one, but her teammates delivered. Leading the offense were Zoe Le Vine, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, Charlotte Holden, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Ashley Callery, who contributed a two-run single.

Hopkinton took the lead in the opening inning. Walls led off with a single. Pinch-runner Ava Davenport stole second and, after an out, advanced to third on a single by Holden. Holly Paharik was given an intentional walk (her first of three on the day) to load the bases. Then with two outs, Callery reached for a low offspeed pitch and pushed it to short right field, just over the reach of the second baseman, driving in two runs.

Marblehead (17-5), the 15th seed, scored its run in the second on a Hopkinton miscue. With a runner on first, Walls threw out the next batter, who was delivering a sacrifice bunt. However, a throw from first to second base to try to catch the runner there went into the outfield, allowing the runner to advance all the way home.

In the top of the fourth, the Magicians had runners on second and third with one out but were unable to tie it. After a bunt led to an out at first with no advancement, Marblehead tried another bunt, but the batter stepped out of the box to lay it down, and the home plate umpire signaled that she was out as the runner from third raced home, turning Marblehead’s cheers into disappointment.

In the top of the fifth, Walls got out of another jam by picking up a strikeout with the potential tying run on third.

Hopkinton broke things open in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Walls walked. Davenport pinch ran and stole second, then went to third on Zoe Le Vine’s single to right. Le Vine took second on catcher’s indifference with Holden at bat. Holden then delivered a single to center. Davenport scored, and when the throw home went past the catcher, Le Vine scooted home as well, with Holden taking third. Caroline Ozmun followed with a fly ball to right that was caught but allowed Holden to tag up and score for a 5-1 lead.

The Hillers added some insurance in the sixth when Walls singled home Callie Arthur, who had singled and stolen second, and Le Vine followed with an RBI triple to deep center.

Walls shut down the Marblehead offense from there, with Le Vine making a diving catch in short right field to end it.

Baseball shut out at Reading

The HHS baseball team could not muster any offense Wednesday, and it resulted in a 2-0 loss to host Reading in the Division 2 Round of 16.

Andrew Beauchemin had the Hillers’ only hit of the day, and Zach Stacey reached on a walk. That was all Hopkinton could get against Reading junior right-hander Grady Ventura, who recorded seven strikeouts in his complete-game gem.

The Hillers, seeded 15th, end their season at 15-8. Second-seeded Reading improves to 19-3 and next will play the winner of Thursday’s game between seventh-seeded Dartmouth and sixth-seeded Shepherd Hill.

Boys tennis plays Thursday

The top-seeded HHS boys tennis team hosts ninth-seeded Walpole on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Division 2 quarterfinals.
