Business Profile: Wild Adventure Programming at Southwick’s Zoo

by | May 4, 2020 | Business

Young people, ages 5 through 16, are fascinated with the Wild Adventure Programming at Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, and registration is open for these popular summer activities that begin June 22.

“We’re hoping with a late June start we can hold all these educational programs organized by Earth Limited, because they offer children the perfect opportunity to explore Southwick’s Zoo and learn through hands-on activities,” said Betsey Brewer Bethel, founder of Earth Ltd.

New for younger children, “From T-Rex to Turkeys” will focus on how modern animals evolved from their prehistoric ancestors. Students will explore the connections between different animal species and what makes them alike and unique.

Young adventurers will experience some of the zoo’s animals up-close and personal in “Animals, Habitats & Ecosystems,” learn about animal behaviors that help their survival, become familiar with different habitats and learn about ecosystems.

Students participating in “Going, Going, Gone” will learn about what species in Southwick’s are threatened and how a person’s actions and choices have an impact on wildlife and the environment.

Using literature, art, science and storytelling, “There’s no such thing as a …” will clear up many common animal misconceptions as well as explore which animals are part of mythology and legends across different cultures.

The popular “Teen Zoology” program (being held twice) is ideal for older children interested in learning about careers in biology, zoology or similar fields. This program will focus on animal conservation as well as the impact of climate change on wildlife. Topics will include native species and coastal ecology.

Kindergartners will learn about mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds through hands-on games and activities, meet a few of Earth’s animal ambassadors face-to-face in the Earth Discovery Center, enjoy arts and crafts and train ride through the North American exhibit and wetlands.

“These are all such valuable programs,” Bethel added. “They teach children respect for nature and our different animals, which is so important since children are the stewards of our future.”

Visit earthltd.org to discover more and sign up. If summer programming is canceled due to COVID-19, refunds will be made available.
