HHS tennis pays tribute to seniors with rolling rally

HHS senior Rachel Kessler shows off the poster she received from her teammates on May 3.

Like all spring sports programs at Hopkinton High School, the girls tennis team was disappointed to lose its season to the coronavirus pandemic, and the Hillers wanted to give their seniors some kind of recognition.

Last Sunday, May 3, the team’s coach and younger players organized a rolling rally that stopped at the homes of all four senior players as well as a senior manager.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for our seniors and their years of dedication to our tennis program,” coach Lyn Calkins said. “It was both fun and emotional to be part of the parade, and even though we were in separate cars, it felt like we were all together briefly during this quarantine.”

Rachel Kessler was one of the seniors who received not just attention but some gifts, including a handmade poster.

“I was shocked when the cars came around the bend on my street,” said Kessler, who is headed to the University of Chicago. “After finding out my senior tennis season was canceled, it meant the world to me to see my team together again. I am so thankful for the community that Hopkinton High School varsity tennis has given me.”

Added Nancy Lagasse, mother of senior Kate Lagasse: “The rolling parade for the seniors was wonderful! The coaches, players, and their families came with their cars decorated and horns honking and brought treats and posters for the girls, who were thrilled. It was great to see everyone!”
