Schools and town offices are closed today as the town works to clean up from a strong winter storm that continues to impact the area.

Notices sent out by the town and the Department of Public Works stated that all town offices, including the library and the Senior Center, are closed today. Curbside trash will not be picked up today, and all pickups will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.

According to the Hopkinton Public Schools website, the district is closed today, and all after-school and evening activities are canceled.

Safety warnings were issued as well. Water-Sewer manager Jed Fenneuff asked residents to assist in maintaining access to the town’s fire hydrants in the interest of community safety.

“If there is a fire hydrant near your home, please help keep it visible and accessible so the Fire Department can use it quickly in an emergency,” Fenneuff requested. He added that burying a fire hydrant “creates a serious fire safety hazard” and is punishable under Massachusetts General Law.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. tonight. The National Weather Service anticipates total snow accumulations between 12 and 20 inches, with localized higher amounts of 20-24 inches possible in northeast and western Massachusetts. Snow-covered roads and low visibility will make travel difficult, according to the NWS website.

“The hazardous road conditions and dangerous cold look to be the greatest risk to residents in our area,” Health Director Shaun McAuliffe noted in an email to the Independent. He also recommended that seniors and individuals with heart and/or respiratory conditions should take care when clearing cars and driveways of snow.

Reports from the NWS put snow totals in Hopkinton at 8 inches as of 6:30 p.m. Sunday night.
