Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Town officials, residents and members of the running community celebrated the installation of a statue of Bobbi Gibb near the starting line of the Boston Marathon on Friday, cementing Gibb’s trailblazing legacy 60 years after her defiant run.

Workers set the statue at the corner of Main Street and Hayden Rowe Street early last week. The 26.2 Foundation organized Friday’s ribbon cutting to celebrate the statue’s placement.

The brief ceremony featured remarks from 26.2 Foundation representatives, Rep. James Arena-DeRosa and Gibb.

Jaimee DeMone, a 26.2 Foundation board member, recounted Gibb’s history with the Boston Marathon and highlighted the impact her run had on equity for women in sports.

DeMone referenced Gibb’s entrance into the 1966 Boston Marathon, jumping into the race after her application to join was denied. Gibb became the first woman to run the race, and her act of defiance led to race directors opening the Boston Marathon to women the following year.

“Bobbi, the impact of your courageous act and life is profound and important,” said DeMone.

Rep. Arena-DeRosa also heralded the success of women in sport. “We have learned that we can celebrate girls and celebrate women in their achievements, and at the same time continue to celebrate boys and their achievements as well,” he said. He and Massachusetts Senate President Karen Spilka helped secure funding for the sculpture site.

Gibb, who created the sculpture, kept her remarks brief. She recognized that the ribbon cutting coincided with both the 60th anniversary of her historic run and the 250th anniversary of the United States. She invoked the principles of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and spoke to the nation’s history of upholding and fighting for civil liberties.

“We’ve always had this vision of humanity,” said Gibb. “I think we need to remember that … and try to live up to that.”
