A piece of Carbone’s Restaurant will live on in Hopkinton with the addition of the restaurant’s iconic sign to the collection at the Hopkinton Historical Society.
“They were in business for 93 years,” said Historical Society vice president Aubrey Doyle. “It’s something that we wanted to keep for people to look at in the future.”
Doyle said one half of the A-frame sign has joined the Historical Society’s collection at its Hayden Rowe Street location. There are plans to mount it and display it with other historical signs such as those for Collella’s Supermarket, Hopkinton’s old savings bank, Averill Paint and the Hopkinton Grange. The other half of the sign made its way across the street from the now closed restaurant to the home of Peter Carbone, Doyle noted.
Preserving the sign came about from the efforts of Bill Hamilton and Historical Society board member Len Holden. Doyle explained that the pair reached out to Carbone after the restaurant closed at the end of June and expressed an interest in bringing it to the Historical Society.
“Peter was all on board,” Doyle recounted. Given the interest, the Historical Society rounded up volunteers and went to the restaurant two weeks ago to take it down. Doyle credited Mark Stickney, Dan McIntyre and John Palmer Jr. for taking on most of the labor in removing the signs.
Doyle said the goal with obtaining the sign, as with most of the Historical Society’s efforts, is to preserve the history of the town in more than just records.
“We want to try to keep this stuff so people recognize what was here in town over the years,” he said.
