Story time event recognizes impact of service dogs

The Hopkinton Public Library will host a story time with service dogs on Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. in celebration of National Service Dog Month.

Attendees will hear a reading of the children’s book “Andy: A Dog’s Tale” by John Kelly. It was adapted from an award-winning short film with the same name.

Hula the therapy dog will be at the event, along with one or two puppies, shared resident Elizabeth Richmond.

“As a local volunteer and puppy raiser with Canine Companions, I’m excited to help celebrate National Service Dog Month here in Hopkinton,” stated Richmond in a recent email to the Independent.

Richmond volunteers with Canine Companions, a service dog company. According to its website, the organization provides service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities and facility dogs to professionals working in healthcare, criminal justice and educational settings.

“The program will introduce children and families to the journey of a service dog — from puppy raising and training to becoming a highly skilled service dog partner,” Richmond explained. “Attendees will hear the story of Andy, learn more about Canine Companions and the important role puppy raisers play, and have the opportunity to meet future service dogs in training.

“It’s a fun way for families to learn about the incredible impact service dogs have on people with disabilities and the many volunteers and supporters who help make these partnerships possible,” she continued.

The event is appropriate for children ages 4 and over and will be held in the Betty Strong Room. It is limited to 30 participants, so registration is required.

The Charter Review Committee on Thursday voted to put off making its recommendations to the town until Annual Town Meeting in May.

Crews will be working on a drain manhole at 63 Main Street this week as well as conducting miscellaneous work throughout the Main Street Corridor.

A new ramp has opened up at the I-90/I-495 interchange as overnight closures in the area continue.

Akiko Hibbett, 102, died Sept. 13.

Town meetings tonight include the Cemetery Commission (6:30).
