Family-owned Bar-low Heating and Air Conditioning has serviced more than a thousand homes in Hopkinton and surrounding towns over nearly a decade. Owner Mike “Hutch” Hutchinson started Bar-low after about 30 years in the HVAC industry. His daughter Kaylyn joined the business as a technician eight years ago. Mike and Kaylyn Hutchinson both were born and raised in Hopkinton and have a special connection to the town. They are graduates of Hopkinton High School, and Mike Hutchinson’s childhood home was next to the former Boston Marathon starting line on Hayden Rowe Street.

Bar-low provides installation, repair and maintenance services to homeowners with oil-fired heating systems, including radiant, forced hot air and hydro-air systems. The company believes its three-person team, which includes technician Steven Beaulieu, enables it to provide a high level of personal service to its customers.

“We are a small company, and that is an advantage because we really get to know our customers and their heating systems,” said Mike Hutchinson. “They know who is walking into their home, and we know potential issues they may experience.”

Efficiency is a key concern for homeowners, noted Kaylyn Hutchinson, especially with the harsh New England winters and rising oil costs. She noted the popularity of energy-efficient cold-start boiler systems. When a homeowner needs a new HVAC system, the Bar-low team pays close attention to their needs and will recommend two to three options.

“There are a lot of older homes and systems in this area, so getting to know each one is important, especially in the middle of winter when you have issues,” said Kaylyn Hutchinson.

The way homeowners purchase their heating oil has changed over the years. Many homeowners now choose to buy wholesale oil, which saves them money. However, wholesalers do not typically service HVAC systems, so homeowners must find a company to service their systems. Bar-low provides maintenance and repair services without the long-term service contracts often required by full-service suppliers.

The Hutchinsons noted that with the colder weather coming, early fall is the perfect time for homeowners to schedule an annual service on their heating system. The Bar-low team fully cleans a home heating system and also is happy to offer cost-saving and preventive advice.

“My best advice for homeowners would be to keep up with annual maintenance,” said Mike Hutchinson. “Maintenance is very important in ensuring your system runs most efficiently. You don’t want to wait until the first cold day to turn the heat on and then experience a problem.”

During the colder months, they recommend practices such as keeping a low but consistent temperature when not at home. They also advise homeowners not to turn their system completely off while on vacation to help prevent frozen pipes.
