Licensed clinical psychologist Keith Donohue recently opened Hopkinton Psychological Services to help local adult clients address their mental health needs and concerns through a combination of science-based treatments and talk therapy.
Combining treatments based on research with a relaxed, conversational psychotherapy, Keith Donohue, Ph.D., helps clients address a variety of mental concerns through his newly established private practice, Hopkinton Psychological Services. “This combination has been shown to be an effective treatment for most clients, allowing them to live the lives they want to,” said Dr. Donohue.
A licensed clinical psychologist trained in research and clinical practice, Dr. Donohue earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and his master’s and doctorate in psychology from Florida State. Completing his advanced clinical training at Rutgers University Behavioral Healthcare/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Sanford Health system, he was a professor of practice in clinical psychology at North Dakota State University for about a decade and has provided therapy and assessment services in various settings including outpatient psychology clinics and inpatient psychiatric hospitals.
Deciding it was time to establish a private practice and wanting to be closer to their extended families, Dr. Donohue, his wife and two children moved to Hopkinton about four years ago. “My brother and his family live here. They spoke highly of the community and its excellent school system,” said Dr. Donohue. “Townspeople have been friendly and welcoming. It is wonderful living in Hopkinton.”
During the last year, he laid the groundwork for his own practice, and just before Labor Day, he opened Hopkinton Psychological Services at 34 Hayden Rowe Street, Suite 194.
Working with individual adult clients, Dr. Donohue specializes in therapy and assessment for anxiety and depression, intrusive thoughts and OCD, psychological trauma and PTSD, plus chronic pain and medical conditions.
His therapy relationship with a client begins with a free telephone consultation. “We explore the client’s needs and what they hope to accomplish during a relaxed 15-20-minute conversation,” said Dr. Donohue. If he and the client feel they can work together, an hour-and-a-half intake session then is conducted, and a schedule of assessments and appointments is agreed upon. The assessments include psychological testing that helps a client understand their personality and why they react to challenges in certain ways. “The testing is used in adjunct with the talk therapy,” said Dr. Donohue, who also employs scientifically informed treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), when appropriate. He added, “Research suggests that these treatments plus talk therapy produce better results and allow clients to feel better faster.”
Dr. Donohue notes, while scheduling is individualized by a person’s needs, clients are typically seen every other week. All client meetings can be done in-person or online through a secure network.
“We also identify specific goals to mark a client’s progress such as someone with depression attending their child’s basketball games,” said Dr. Donohue. After a few sessions, a client’s progress is evaluated to see if goals are being met and how therapy should proceed.
“Therapy does not need to be lifelong,” said Dr. Donohue. “My goal is to help my clients feel better as soon as possible.”
