Hopkinton students of all grade levels will have a chance to show off their creative skills with a contest launched by the school district and the Hopkinton Parent Teacher Organization to redesign the Hopkinton High School concession stand.
The contest, open to students in grades K-12, asks for participants to come up with a design for the Hiller Hut that “celebrates the school spirit that connects our entire Hopkinton community,” according to a flyer posted to Facebook. Hopkinton Public Schools Superintendent Evan Bishop stated in an email that the idea came about through conversations with community members and representatives from the HPTO.
Students must make their design by hand or virtually and create an original work. The rules state that the design must incorporate green and orange, and celebrate Hiller pride. According to the flyer, designs will be judged on creativity, originality, Hiller spirit, the use of the school colors and how well the idea could translate to the actual building.
“I’m excited to see how our students capture Hiller pride in their own way,” Bishop stated. “My hope is for something creative and welcoming that reflects the school spirit and community connections we share across Hopkinton.”
Bishop, along with HPTO members and others from the Superintendent’s office, will be part of the judging committee. The contest is open until Nov. 24. Designs must be submitted on the HPTO website.
The superintendent explained that finalists at the elementary, middle and high school levels will be chosen along with a grand prize design. The winning submission will “serve as the inspiration” for the Hiller Hut’s final design. “Some adjustments may be needed based on feasibility, building requirements and school approval,” Bishop noted.
Elements from the other finalists’ submissions also might be incorporated, though Bishop stressed that the district could not guarantee the inclusion of all the finalists’ designs.
“We’ll work with the contest winner to adapt the design to fit the available budget while preserving the creativity and spirit of the student’s original idea,” Bishop added.
