Sports Roundup: HHS athletic awards announced

by | Jun 26, 2020 | Sports

Hopkinton High School recently announced its athletic award recipients.

Cami McDonald, who lettered in field hockey, basketball and lacrosse, and Drew Rancatore, a member of the basketball and baseball teams, were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Schuyler Gooley and Alex Brown, both of whom starred in cross country and track, were named Athletes of the Year.

Angie Grabmeier, a standout in volleyball and track, and Steven Maffiore, a member of the soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams, won the Marines Distinguished Athlete awards.

Hillers earn lax honors

Four Hopkinton High School players received awards from the Eastern Massachusetts Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association (EMGLCA). Olivia O’Connor won the Community Service Award, Hannah Ianelli won the Leadership Award, Cami McDonald won the Scholar-Athlete Award and Maria Vasington won the Sportsmanship Award.

According to the announcement from the EMGLCA, the awards “were created as a way to recognize members of the Class of 2020 for their remarkable contributions to their programs over the last four years.  In spite of the disruption to their senior years and the cancellation of the spring season, we know that seniors have continued to motivate and inspire their teammates with leadership and positivity. … We will always be indebted to the Class of 2020 for their resiliency, inspiration, and unwavering commitment during the most challenging of times.”

McDonald also won the inaugural Hopkinton Girls Youth Lacrosse Scholarship.

Bowdoin honors Finnerty

Kara Finnerty, who grew up in Hopkinton and attended high school at St. Mark’s in Southborough, won the Sidney J. Watson Award as Bowdoin College’s outstanding multi-sport athlete for 2019-20.

A four-year starter for both the field hockey and lacrosse teams, she was an All-American in both sports.

“What a fantastic four years you’ve had, and it started the moment that you stepped on campus,” field hockey coach Nicky Pearson coach said in a video tribute. “You will be remembered as one of the most decorated players in the history of our program. But what really sets you apart is the influence that you’ve had on your teammates and the outstanding leadership qualities that you brought to our program for the last two years. This is what makes you such a special person that we all love to be around.”

HHS fall registration open

Registration is open for Hopkinton High School and Hopkinton Middle School students interested in participating in a fall sport. Parents should use their Family ID account to register. The deadline for HHS is Aug. 14 and for HMS is Sept. 4, but families are encouraged to register early so the schools can make plans.
