Successful weekend for Hillers fall sports teams

Hopkinton High School fall sports teams (except for golf, which already has played three matches) opened their seasons this past weekend. Below is a roundup of the games. For complete schedules and results, check out our new schedule/scoreboard page.

The girls soccer team opened with a scoreless tie vs. Medway on Saturday. Senior goalie Kristin McCluskey made a number of stellar saves, including one with under two minutes remaining. In Sunday’s match at Medway the Hillers took a 1-0 victory on a goal by sophomore Kylie Skiba. Junior Ashley Butler and senior Alexis Viehl led the Hillers’ effort in the win.

Boys soccer bounced back from a 6-2 loss in its opener on Saturday to earn a 3-3 tie with Medway the next day. Sophomore Sean Golembiewski scored the tying goal with about 15 minutes remaining, his second of the game (the first coming off a nice feed from classmate Sam Vasington). Junior Owen Schnur had the Hillers’ other goal, on a penalty kick.

Field hockey knocked off visiting Medway 2-1 on Saturday. Seniors Alyssa Souza and Sarah Doyle scored the goals and freshman Caroline Kane shined in goal. The Hillers then dropped a 5-0 decision at Medway on Sunday.

Boys cross country raced past host Medway 19-40 on Saturday. Senior Nick Brown finished the 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 13 seconds to take first place. The Hillers placed runners in spots 3-11, led by Wyatt Ruff, Jake LaCoche and Colby Michaud.

Girls cross country won its opener 15-48 on Saturday at Medway. Senior Hope DeLuca led the way, finishing the 3-mile course in under 20 minutes, with Lisa Levandosky, Autumn Tumbleton, Grace Joy and Katie Callery taking spots 2-5. Hayley Glassburn and Kate Beauvais were seventh and eighth.

The golf team is 3-0 heading into Tuesday’s match vs. Ashland (UPDATE: Tuesday and Wednesday’s matches have been postponed). In an Oct. 7 win over visiting Norton senior Ryan Lundy shot a 2-under-par 34 to lead the way. One day earlier, Andrew Morse recorded a 37 in a 240-283 win over Norton at TPC Boston. Leo Shinmura carded a 38 and Geoff Tocco and Jack Petruney each finished at 39. In the opener on Oct. 1, Shinmura (34), Tocco (35) and Lundy (37) led the way in a 222-238 win at Holliston.
