Hopkinton Today: Wednesday, Nov. 11

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a video or two to brighten your morning.

In his update to the Select Board on Tuesday night, health director Shaun McAuliffe said the town currently has 10 COVID-19 cases, with two more anticipated on Wednesday. The number, at zero one month ago, had spiked to 14 last Tuesday, then dropped to five a few days later before the latest jump. “Consistent with what’s going on in the state and the country we continue to see a spike in cases throughout Hopkinton,” McAuliffe said, adding: “We’re trending in the wrong direction. We need to course correct and work at reducing our positivity rate.”

In other news from the Select Board, the Hopkinton Police Department welcomed two new officers, the library was approved to hire an assistant, and the town continues to wait for an announcement regarding the winning bid for the Main Street Corridor Project.

Hopkinton High School placed 14 individuals on the list of Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2021. The students were recognized for demonstrating outstanding performance on the qualifying test, placing in the top 50,000 out of the 1.5 million students who took the test last year.

The new edition of Business Briefs leads with state Sen. Karen Spilka nominating Hopkinton-based Lykan Bioscience for a Manufacturer of the Year award, part of a series of awards given by the state legislature’s Manufacturing Caucus to promote “Made in Massachusetts.”

The town’s annual Veterans Day ceremonies will be held at the Town Common at 11 a.m. Police Chief Joseph Bennett is the guest speaker. Afterward there will be a rededication of the St. John’s Wilson Street Cemetery, which recently was renovated as part of an Eagle Scout project. The public is invited, with gathering rules observed.

Photos of the Day: As part of his Eagle Scout project, Ryan Brennan has been working on improvements at the Town Common. This past weekend he led efforts to clean and spruce up the war memorial in preparation for Wednesday’s Veterans Day ceremonies. In photo at bottom, Ryan’s father, Hopkinton Police Sgt. Tim Brennan, washes the memorial.
